At Eleven Eleven Brewing Company, all of our beers are treated to remove gluten. If you've been steering clear of beer due to gluten sensitivity and are curious what options you might have, this page is for you. Below are some common questions and helpful answers to guide you.
Gluten-reduced beer starts as traditional beer — brewed with barley, wheat, or rye — but is treated with a special enzyme that breaks down the gluten proteins during fermentation. This significantly reduces the gluten content of the beer while maintaining the taste, aroma, and character of real beer.
No. Gluten-reduced beers are not the same as gluten-free. Gluten free beers are brewed with different ingredients than craft beer. Gluten-free beers use alternative ingredients absent of gluten entirely. With gluten removed, beer is brewed with normal ingredients and the gluten content is reduced/removed during the fermentation process. With this process, trace amounts of gluten may still be present. This is important to consider for individuals with celiac disease or a severe gluten allergy.
While some individuals with gluten intolerance, and even celiac disease enjoy Eleven Eleven beers without issue, those with celiac disease or severe gluten allergies should always consult a medical professional before trying any gluten-reduced or gluten removed products. Your health always comes first.
We use a process during fermentation that includes an enzyme to break down gluten proteins. This method has been widely adopted by brewers and does not affect the taste or quality of the beer — it simply helps reduce the gluten content of the finished product.
Every batch is different, but typically the gluten content is reduced to below 20 parts per million (ppm) — the same threshold the FDA uses for labeling foods as gluten-free. However, this does not make the beer gluten free. Please see the difference above: Are gluten-reduced beers the same as gluten-free beers.
Not at all. That's the best part! With gluten-reduced beer you can enjoy the full craft beer experience — taste, aroma, body, and finish — without compromise or alternative ingredients.
